Applications for Academic Year 2009-10 and Summer 2009 FLAS fellowships for modern Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, and Persian are no longer being accepted, as the competition is now closed. Applications for Academic Year 2010-11 and Summer 2010 are forthcoming.
FLAS fellowships provide full tuition and a monthly stipend for the study of Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, and Persian. The fellowships aim to provide training in these languages in order to meet the national need for specialists on the Middle East region. The awards may be used for language study at Georgetown University, advanced language study overseas (Summer grants only), or dissertation research abroad. Summer awards allow graduate students to complete the equivalent of one academic year of Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, and Persian during the summer. Those who apply for dissertation research must be extensively using foreign language sources at the advanced level.
Eligibility:
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Must be enrolled in a full-time program of graduate study at the time the award becomes effective
- Must be enrolled in intermediate or advanced Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, or Persian, as well as in related area studies courses during the academic year (Summer grantees need only enroll in an intensive language course) OR must be engaged in full-time dissertation research, extensively using foreign language sources at the advanced level
- Must show potential for superior academic achievement based on academic record
- Must demonstrate long-term interest in the Middle East

$15,000 plus tuition and fees (Academic Year)
$2,500 plus tuition and fees (Summer)
