FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDIES (FLAS) FELLOWSHIPS

Subject to renewal of funding and Congressional appropriation, the National Resource Center on the Middle East will award Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for language and area studies for Academic Year 2010-11 and Summer 2010. FLAS Fellowships are available in modern Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish through the National Resource Center on the Middle East at Georgetown University.

Academic Year FLAS Fellowships provide full tuition, fees and a stipend of $15,000 for the study of Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish. The fellowships aim to provide training in these languages in order to meet the national need for specialists on the Middle East region. FLAS Fellows are required to take a language and area studies course each semester of the fellowship. Please note that the FLAS Fellowship is for one year of graduate study only.

The Academic Year FLAS Fellowships are contingent upon the renewal of funding from the U.S. Department of Education. Applicants will be notified of their status around late June 2010.

Summer FLAS Fellowships allow current Georgetown undergraduate and graduate students to complete the equivalent of one academic year of Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish during the summer. The fellowship provides $5,000 in tuition and fees and $2,500 in stipend for the summer. The fellowship may be used for domestic or international study. Students at the intermediate level must participate in a program of six weeks in duration with a minimum of 140 contact hours. Advanced students must participate in a six-week program with a minimum of 120 contact hours.
