Apply for a FLAS Fellowship

Summer 2017 FLAS Deadline: March 1, 2017
Academic Year FLAS Deadline: Extended to May 31, 2017

To be considered for a FLAS Fellowship, applicants must submit the following:

  1. Summer or Academic Year FLAS Application Form
Note: The statement of purpose, résumé or C.V., and transcripts should be attached to the application form and uploaded as one document.
  2. Statement of Purpose
This should be no more than 750 words and should address: why you are applying for a FLAS Fellowship, your commitment to the field of Middle East Studies, your relevant prior language training, how language acquisition and area studies training is integral to your degree program and long-term goals, and how your long-term academic and career plans relate to the goals of the FLAS Program.

  3. Résumé or C.V.

  4. Undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable)
Please note that if you are a graduate student using MyAccess to obtain your transcripts, some language classes may be listed on an undergraduate transcript. It is your responsibility to print and submit all transcripts documenting all relevant classes.

  5. ACADEMIC YEAR FLAS APPLICANTS ONLY: An official letter from your department confirming that your department or program will top off your FLAS award*
Federal regulations require that FLAS fellowships cover a student's full tuition and fees. Therefore, your program or department must commit to paying all tuition and fees not covered by the FLAS fellowship.  You should provide a letter signed by a representative of your department confirming that your program will cover all remaining tuition/fees for the 2017-2018 academic year.  Students who do not show proof of departmental support will not be considered for FLAS.
*The letter of departmental support is only required for students NOT enrolled in the MA in Arab Studies program

  6. Two recommendation letters
You must submit two letters of recommendation from individuals who are able to comment on your academic abilities, commitment to language acquisition and area studies, and potential for future achievement. One recommendation must be from a current or former instructor in the language for which you are seeking the FLAS Fellowship (i.e., Arabic, Hebrew, Persian or Turkish). A maximum of three recommendations will be accepted per application.  Recommendation letters should be submitted by the recommender, either via secure upload below or by email to kelli.harris@georgetown.edu.

  7. Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
If you have not already done so, you must complete a FAFSA form by the respective FLAS application deadline. For questions, please contact your counselor in GU’s Office of Student Financial Services. Please note that you may be asked to provide additional financial information to determine your financial need.  Summer FLAS applicants should submit a FAFSA for the current academic year; academic year FLAS applicants should submit a FAFSA for the upcoming academic year.
